    The VA Medical Centers estimate that 20-30% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will require treatment for mental health issues.

    Veterans are overrepresented among the homeless population: Alabama’s homeless veterans represent 16% of all homeless persons.

    19% of Alabama veterans receive disability payments from the VA, the sixth highest rate in the country. 35% of veterans have never registered for the VA benefits for which they are entitled.

Priority Veteran has helped more than 1,700 Alabama veterans who are struggling with re-integration and homelessness.

Priority Veteran provides veterans with intensive one-on-one assistance to locate stable permanent housing and links them to resources to gain the skills and knowledge to help them remain financially stable. Case Managers help veterans with needs such as:

  • creating a Housing Stability Plan
  • accessing medical or mental health services
  • enrolling for veteran’s benefits
  • job search assistance
  • financial coaching
  • and more

Priority Veteran, in partnership with United Way of Central Alabama, provides veterans across Alabama with federal, state and local resources; linking veterans to hope. Priority Veteran began offering services to veterans in October 2013 with a $2 million Supportive Services for Veteran Families grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

As homeless veterans move into their new housing, they need basic necessities. Priority Veteran is requesting financial contributions of $10, $20, $50 or more to purchase basic household supplies for veterans and their new stable housing.
